Yes, we can

As part of the Applied Designs, Skills and Technology curriculum Div 3 was given the task, "Using wood, build something that will move quickly down a ramp." This challenge required the students choose a design, identify key features and determine criteria for success.

The students worked in partners to complete technical drawings of their prototype. The students had to follow their own plan for production that included key stages, and carrying it out, making changes as needed.

Woodworking hand building techniques involve complex tasks that require the acquisition of additional skills. The making aspect of ADST involved the students using appropriate tools and materials for production.

Using the plans as a guide, the children used clamps to hold their wood, then cut the wood to match their specs using hand saws. Basic joinery skills using hammers, nails and cordless drills were used to build the wooden vehicles. The final products were sanded using a block and sanding paper.

Safety and personal space were stressed to be of utmost importance during this project.

While learning to build with wood the students are self-regulating, as they develop an awareness that learning new skills involves patience and time. The children are also learning that they can persevere in difficult situations. Yes, we can!
