Getting Student Input for Our School Focus

We began in the Spring to check-in with our students through a short, written survey to get their perspective on how things are going for them at Grauer Elementary, as we continue to look at shifting our School Focus. All of our students in grades 4 – 7 were surveyed on the following questions:

Which academic subject (not PE or Art) do you like the most and feel the strongest in? Why?

Which subject do you struggle with the most at school (can include PE or Art)? Why?

What are you learning at school and why is it important?

Can you name 2 Adults in our school (Teacher; Principal; Vice-Principal; Education Assistant; Noon Hour Supervisor; Counsellor) who care about you and believe you can be successful. How do they show you they care?

Do you feel you are a part of the Grauer Phoenix Community? Why do you feel that way?

Tell me 1 thing (or more) we could do to improve your experience here at Grauer Elementary.

In discussions with staff, we decided to limit our survey to the Intermediate Students, as some of the questions require some deeper, introspective thinking that we thought might be too difficult for younger students to do. We have now completed that surveying of our Intermediate Students as we head into Summer Break. Over the summer, we will analyze the data from the surveys to see if any trends emerge. During our September Professional Development Day, staff will take some time to discuss the data and any trends that may emerge from the surveys. This student survey data, along with teacher observations from the past year, will help to shape a new school-wide focus for the 2024-2025 school year.
