Our Learning

Students in Division 3: Have been building vehicles that can move down a ramp. They have worked with the design process, prototyping and testing their cars, and then made adjustments to improve them. Students will then use their vehicles to explore concepts of force and motion.

As part of the Applied Designs, Skills and Technology Div 3 is learning how to knit. Knitting is a hand building technique which is complex task that requires the acquisition of additional skills.

The making aspect of ADST involves the students using appropriate tools and materials for production. (knitting needles and wool). The students have to follow a plan for production that includes key stages, and carrying it out, making changes as needed. The materials are used in ways that minimize waste. As well as teacher demonstrations and support, a personal digital instructional tool (a learn to knit video) was used to enhance learning and engagement. The Beginning Language Learners were able to watch learn to knit videos in their first language to help with comprehension and enhance student success

While learning to knit the students are self regulating, as they develop an awarness that learning involves patience and time. The children are learning that they can persevere in difficult situations. Yes, we can!

Students in Division 8To explore the ideas of “designs grow out of natural curiosity” and “skills can be developed through play”, the students used materials around the classroom to create different modes of transportation.  They worked in pairs to discuss and choose what they wanted to make, then worked collaboratively to build their vehicle.  We had trucks, trains, cars, skytrains, boats, busses, and a UFO.  Through this fun, hands-on, and engaging activity, the students are learning how to form ideas, incorporate ideas from their peers, work cooperatively and effectively with others.

Students in Division 7: we are exploring different forms of storytelling.   We have been learning about the setting in a story and how it helps develop a sense of place.  We created Wool Story Maps to help create a setting for our characters.
